Trainee Or Entry Path
Pharmacy Technician Trainee
A pharmacy technician trainee applicant must be at least 16 years old. The current application instructions direct applicants who have not completed training or certification to register for the technician-trainee specialty.
Valid for 4 years and not renewable, but may be extended for 1 year for good cause. Employer failure to provide training is not good cause.
The trainee specialty is removed from the license when proof of completed Board-approved training or Board-approved national certification is uploaded. A trainee whose registration expires must cease practicing as a trainee and may apply for full technician registration after completing training.
Certification And Training
Certification
National certification from a Board-approved national certifying authority is one Vermont eligibility route, but it is not the only route because Board-approved training is an alternative. Follow OPR's accepted-certifying-authority instructions for the certification you plan to use.
Training
Vermont requires full technician applicants to be certified by a Board-approved national certifying authority or to complete a Board-approved training program. Employer-provided training is allowed if it covers the competency areas listed in Board Rule 4-4.
Fees
| Initial application | $70. |
|---|---|
| Background check | No separate background-check fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow. |
| Fingerprinting | No separate fingerprinting fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow. |
| Renewal | $85. |
| Late or reinstatement | No pharmacy technician-specific late or reinstatement fee is listed in the current public Vermont sources. |
Renewal And Continuing Education
Biennial, July 31 of odd-numbered years.
Pharmacy technicians must complete at least 6 hours of approved continuing education coursework every biennial period. Approved CE may be ACPE, AMA Category 1, Board-approved, or approved by a Board-designated entity. Pharmacy technicians administering immunizations have additional CPR, training, and immunization-related CE requirements.
Scope And Supervision Note
Vermont's current rules define technician and trainee scope under pharmacist delegation and include separate safeguards for technician product verification and vaccine administration.
No fixed pharmacist-to-technician ratio is listed in the current Board rules.
A pharmacy technician or trainee may perform delegated tasks under pharmacist supervision but may not re-delegate dispensing or vaccine-administration tasks and may not perform acts requiring pharmacist professional judgment.
