A pharmacy technician in training is enrolled in an ASHP/ACPE-accredited academic experiential rotation program. The Board registers a person as a pharmacy technician in training after receiving a request from the pharmacist-in-charge when appropriate.
Maximum of two years unless an extension is granted.
The trainee must complete the state educational preparation requirement and obtain approved national certification to qualify for full registered pharmacy technician status.

10 hours annually, except the CE requirement does not apply to a first renewal. No carryover is allowed except CE obtained during the 12 months before the annual reporting period may be used for the current or previous period, but not both. Technicians must maintain records for two years and provide proof upon Board request. A current approved national certification certificate can serve as proof of the technician CE requirement.
Scope And Supervision Note
North Dakota technician registration, certification, ASHP training, and advanced technician functions all affect how technicians may be used.
One pharmacist may supervise four pharmacy technicians in retail and hospital settings; one pharmacist may supervise five pharmacy technicians in closed-door pharmacies that do not deal directly with patients.
Technicians may perform assigned technical services related to preparing pharmaceuticals for dispensing, but may not evaluate patient profiles, consult with patients about medication use, make decisions requiring pharmacist professional education, or engage in pharmacy practice except as authorized by a pharmacist and North Dakota law/rules.
