The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) reports results on a scaled range from 1,000 to 1,600 points, and 1,400 is the passing score. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) administers the exam and awards its Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation after its requirements are met and the passing result is final.
Because the exam uses scaled scores rather than raw percentages, a score of 1,400 is not the same as answering 87.5% of the questions correctly.

Use this table for a score on your final PTCE report. The result shown right after the exam is usually Pass or Fail and is still preliminary.

The cutoff is simple: 1,400 passes; 1,399 does not. Any score from 1,400 through 1,600 meets the exam’s passing standard.

What a scaled PTCE score means
A scaled score is a reporting scale, not a point total. Think of it as a common ruler used across different versions of the exam.
The exam comes in multiple forms. The scoring system accounts for small differences in difficulty so candidates are measured against the same Pass/Fail standard. That is why the report uses the 1,000-1,600 scale instead of simply listing a raw percent correct.
This also explains a common mistake:
Do not calculate 1,400 ÷ 1,600 and call the result the required percentage. That treats the scale like 1,600 available points. Because the exam uses scaled rather than raw scores, the division does not tell you how many questions you must answer correctly.
The exam has 90 multiple-choice questions: 80 are scored and 10 are unscored. The unscored questions are mixed throughout the test and are not identified. Those counts still do not provide a one-to-one formula for earning a 1,400 scaled score.
In the Pharmacy Tech Scholar℠ course, we require a passing score of 80% or greater for all of our exams. While this number is not exact, it is the percentage score that we believe provides a high level of confidence that would correlate with a passing PTCE result. That does not mean that lower scores would not pass or that an 80% guarantees a pass, but based on the PTCE reporting available to us, that seems like a safe barometer to aim for.
Preliminary result vs. final score report
After the exam, PTCB normally shows a Pass or Fail result. That screen can be reassuring or disappointing; but it is still preliminary.
PTCB’s preliminary-result explanation says the immediate result is not official or final. The organization performs quality checks before releasing the final score report, which is typically available in your account within three weeks.
The sequence is simple:
- You finish the exam and receive a preliminary Pass or Fail indication.
- PTCB completes its post-exam checks.
- The final score report appears in your account, typically within three weeks.
- If the final result is passing and your other requirements are complete, PTCB activates your certification.
Until that final step, describe the screen as a preliminary result rather than saying your certification is active.
Not every PTCB exam uses the PTCE score range
“PTCB score range” can refer to more than one exam. The 1,000-1,600 range belongs to the PTCE used for CPhT certification.
PTCB also offers assessment-based certificate programs with their own exams. Its certificate-exam scoring answer gives those exams a 0-400 range with 300 as the passing scaled score.
If the name on your report is not Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), use the scoring page for the exam named there. Do not apply the 1,400 passing score to every PTCB credential exam.
What to do with your result
If your preliminary result says Pass
Wait for the final report in your account before treating the result as settled. Once the passing result is posted and your other requirements are complete, your certification can become active.
If your final score is below 1,400
Use the report as a starting point rather than a verdict on whether you can succeed. Review the current exam content areas, identify where your preparation was weakest, and build a focused plan before another attempt. If the number came from a practice test
