Connecticut requires individuals acting as pharmacy technicians to be registered with, or certified with, the Department of Consumer Protection, with a limited exception for students performing duties as part of an accredited pharmacy technician education program under a pharmacist instructor. DCP's online instructions direct first-time applicants to create an eLicense account, choose an initial application, pay the invoice, and allow 5-10 business days for DCP review. The paper application indicates new applications approved January 1 through March 31 receive an expiration date of March 31 of the next year.

How To Start

  1. Confirm you have a Connecticut pharmacy position or qualifying student-program placement.
  2. Create an eLicense account, start the pharmacy technician application, and pay the invoice.
  3. Complete pharmacist-manager initial training before regularly performing assigned tasks.
  4. Register within 30 days after training begins unless a narrow student-program exception applies.
  5. Renew each year by March 31 and maintain ongoing in-service training through the pharmacy.

Certification And Training

Certification

PTCB certification is not required for basic Connecticut pharmacy technician registration. Connecticut may certify a person as a pharmacy technician if the person meets registration requirements and holds PTCB certification or another equivalent approved certification. Certification also affects some community-pharmacy staffing ratios and is required for advanced pharmacy technician registration/designation.

Training

Connecticut rules require initial and continuing training determined by the pharmacist manager, including on-the-job and related education matched to assigned tasks. PTCB-recognized programs are not a Connecticut state training category for basic registration.

Fees

Initial application$100.
Background checkNo separate background-check fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
FingerprintingNo separate fingerprinting fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
Renewal$50 annually.
Late or reinstatementA registration may be reinstated within three years after expiration if the completed reinstatement application and applicable fees are submitted; follow the reinstatement application for the current fee.
Other$25, in addition to the basic technician registration fee.
Other$25, in addition to the basic technician renewal fee.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Annual, March 31.

Connecticut registrations expire annually on March 31, and the renewal fee is $50. Connecticut rules require pharmacist-manager continuing in-service training to maintain technician competency, but they do not set a separate state CE-hour total for basic technician registration renewal.

Scope And Supervision Note

Connecticut scope rules connect registration timing, pharmacist-manager training, certified-technician staffing ratios, and the advanced technician path.

Community pharmacies generally may not exceed two technicians per supervising pharmacist, except up to three in specified sterile/unit-dose/bulk-compounding settings or when at least one of the three technicians is certified and the supervising pharmacist has not refused the three-technician ratio. Institutional pharmacy ratios vary by setting: outpatient 2:1 with possible petition to 3:1; inpatient and satellite 3:1 with possible petition to 5:1.

Technicians may not receive new verbal prescription orders, counsel patients about medication, interpret or clarify prescriptions, perform professional consultation, verify prescriptions before release, or determine generic/therapeutic equivalence. Rules allow limited communication for certain noncontrolled refill authorizations when conditions are met and pharmacist review occurs.

The course does not replace state applications, Board decisions, PTCB decisions, employer requirements, or other state-specific steps.
