Certification And Training
Certification
Kansas requires technicians registered on or after July 1, 2017 to pass a Board-approved national certification examination. The Board identifies PTCB and NHA ExCPT as approved exams. The Board does not require technicians to maintain national certification after passing the one-time exam, though an employer may require it.
Training
Kansas states that no private educational program is required for initial registration and private programs are not registered or approved by the Board. Separately, Kansas regulation requires a pharmacy-specific training course for technician tasks and requires the pharmacist-in-charge to maintain training records.

Renewal And Continuing Education
Biennial. Kansas pharmacy technician registrations expire on the date printed on the registration. The Board technician CE example uses November 1 through October 31 renewal periods, and renewal is typically available between September 15 and October 31.
20 hours per registration renewal period. CE must be completed before renewal; there is no grace period. ACPE hours are automatically accepted, and technicians may use CE applied to national certification renewal toward Kansas state registration renewal. CE cannot be carried over.
Scope And Supervision Note
Kansas certification status affects the number of uncertified technicians a pharmacist may supervise and certain refill or transfer functions.
The maximum pharmacy-technician-to-pharmacist ratio is 4:1, and a pharmacist may not supervise more than two technicians who have not passed a Board-approved certification exam.
Technicians work under pharmacist supervision and are not permitted to perform judgmental functions.
