Candidate Registration And Moving From Another State
Most first-time applicants begin with Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration. You qualify through one of three options—an age-18+ nationally accredited and Louisiana Board-approved program, an age-16+ Louisiana Department of Education pharmacy technician career path, or an age-18+ training arrangement verified by an eligible Louisiana pharmacist.
Candidate registration lasts 24 months and cannot be renewed. If your qualifying training ends before completion, you must relinquish the registration within 10 days. The Board may reissue it if qualifying training resumes, but the original expiration date stays in place.
A different option applies if you currently hold a pharmacy technician credential from another state's pharmacy board and have held it for at least one year. You may apply directly for the Louisiana certificate, but you still must meet Louisiana's application and examination provisions.
Certification And Training
Certification
Louisiana requires a passing result on a Board-approved technician examination before the full certificate. It accepts the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Waiting to take or retake an exam does not extend candidate registration.
Training
The nationally accredited and Louisiana Board-approved program option follows that program's practical-experience curriculum. The other candidate options require at least 600 hours in a Louisiana pharmacy, with no more than 50 hours normally credited per week. A minor's employment certificate may set a lower limit.

Renewal And Continuing Education
Louisiana Pharmacy Technician Certificates expire June 30 each year. The ordinary online renewal window runs from May 1 through June 30. You may not assist in pharmacy practice with an expired certificate.
Complete 10 technician-specific ACPE or Louisiana Board-approved continuing-pharmacy-education hours during the 12 months before expiration. The Board's renewal page describes limited first-renewal and military-classified CPT-M exceptions.
Scope And Supervision Note
Candidates and technicians work under direct and immediate pharmacist supervision. The combined number of candidates, certified technicians, and interns may not exceed four per pharmacist on duty, and candidates alone may not exceed two per pharmacist. Candidates and technicians may not counsel patients or independently interpret prescription orders; the rule adds other task-specific limits.
