Trainee Or Entry Path

Pharmacy Technician Trainee license

Applicant must be enrolled in an approved pharmacy technician training program and, if 18 or older, submit an original Utah BCI criminal history report unless exempted.

The trainee application says the trainee must complete the training program and pass the required exam within two years after obtaining the trainee license. DOPL extension instructions handle any extension request.

Complete the accepted training path, supervised practical training documentation where applicable, and pass PTCB/PTCE or NHA ExCPT before applying for the Pharmacy Technician license.

Certification And Training

Certification

Utah DOPL states that pharmacy technician applicants must pass either the PTCE administered by PTCB or the ExCPT administered by NHA, and the current application asks for current PTCB or ExCPT certification.

Training

Utah requires a training program that meets Division/Board standards and documentation such as a certificate of completion and practical-training affidavit. Current forms describe accepted program categories and require at least 180 practical training hours in the affidavit. PTCB-recognized programs are not a standalone Utah training category.

Fees

Background check$32 combined BCI/FBI fingerprint file search fees for pharmacy technician applicants in the FY 2025-2026 DOPL fee schedule; vendor fees may also apply.
FingerprintingDOPL says applicants pay the vendor's fee for fingerprinting; vendor instructions control the final amount.
Renewal$57 pharmacy technician renewal fee.
Late or reinstatement$20 additional fee if reinstating within 30 days after expiration; $50 additional fee if reinstating after 30 days and within two years.
Other$50.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Two-year renewal cycle September 30 of odd-numbered years.

20 hours during the past two years, unless current PTCB or ExCPT certification fulfills the CE requirement; first-cycle pro rata rules may apply. DOPL renewal materials state that current PTCB or ExCPT certification fulfills CE requirements for a pharmacy technician, except vaccine-related hours where applicable. Renewal documentation is not submitted unless audited.

Scope And Supervision Note

Utah trainee licensing, technician tasks, vaccine administration, and checking functions are rule-specific.

DOPL materials describe permitted technician tasks, prohibited pharmacist-judgment tasks, vaccine-administration training and supervision conditions, and direct-supervision limits for trainees.

Use the Utah rule materials for current ratio and supervision details that apply to your role.
