Trainee Or Entry Path

Applicant must meet trainee education and conduct/background requirements and be enrolled in a Board-approved competency-based program or employed by a pharmacy in an on-the-job competency-based program.

For pharmacy-provided on-the-job programs, the training hours and exam/CPhT timing are tied to the trainee permit filing date.

Complete qualifying training, pass PTCE or ExCPT, obtain CPhT, and submit the required information with the application for full West Virginia pharmacy technician registration.

Certification And Training

Certification

West Virginia requires national certification through one of the accepted exam routes for most modern technician-registration applicants; PTCB is accepted but not the only accepted route.

Training

West Virginia requires a Board-approved competency-based training route. PTCB-recognized online programs are not a standalone West Virginia-approved training category.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Biennial, June 30.

Conditional. Registrants renewing through the CPhT framework must submit current national certification. Certain other registrants must complete 20 CPE hours every two years, including one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety.

Scope And Supervision Note

West Virginia scope rules cover supervision, tasks, ratios, name tags, transfers, and prohibited pharmacist-judgment functions.

No more than six pharmacy technicians and/or pharmacy technician trainees per on-duty pharmacist, excluding pharmacy interns, under the 15 CSR 7 text.

Technicians and trainees may not receive new oral/verbal prescription orders, perform drug regimen review, patient counseling, prescription transfer, or pharmacist-judgment functions.
