Kentucky Pharmacy Technician License Requirements

This guide explains the application path, training and certification role, fees, renewal, and where Pharmacy Tech ScholarSM may fit.

This guide is for educational purposes only. State laws, rules, forms, fees, and agency instructions can change. Use the applicable state board or licensing agency information when making application, course-enrollment, or credential decisions.

Quick Answer

Credential

Kentucky requires a person who assists in the practice of pharmacy to be registered as a pharmacy technician unless a statutory exemption applies.

Working Before Approval

A person may assist without the completed registration if the person has filed the application and no more than 30 days have elapsed since first pharmacy employment; this exception does not apply after denial, for applicants under age 16, or for certain prior denied/revoked/suspended registrations. Separate family-employment and accredited work-study exemptions also exist.

Application methodApply through the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Licensure Gateway by creating an account and selecting the Pharmacy Technician Initial Application. How To Start

  1. Create a Licensure Gateway account and select the Pharmacy Technician Initial Application.
  2. Get an NABP e-Profile ID before submitting the Kentucky technician application.
  3. Submit the initial application no more than 30 days after first pharmacy employment.
  4. Add certified-technician documentation only if you will use certified technician duties.
  5. Renew annually by March 31; vaccine duties have separate training and CE requirements.

Trainee Or Entry Path

No separate trainee credential; statutory application-pending and work-study/family exemptions

A person who has filed the technician registration application may assist for up to 30 days after first pharmacy employment unless a statutory disqualifier applies. A person may also be exempt while employed by certain family members or participating in an accredited secondary or postsecondary work-study program.

Application-pending exemption is limited to no more than 30 days after first pharmacy employment.

Complete the Board registration process through the Licensure Gateway and receive the registration certificate and pocket card.

Certification And Training

Certification

PTCB or NHA certification is not required for standard Kentucky pharmacy technician registration. Kentucky recognizes a certified pharmacy technician if the person has a current PTCB PTCE or NHA ExCPT certificate, or meets the nuclear pharmacy technician training route, and certified technicians may perform certain broader delegated duties.

Training

No general state training-program prerequisite is listed for standard pharmacy technician registration. Training is task-specific for certain duties, such as vaccine administration by registered technicians, and national certification matters for certified-technician status.

Fees

Initial application$25.
Background checkNo separate background-check fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
FingerprintingNo separate fingerprinting fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
Renewal$25.
Late or reinstatement$25 delinquent fee in addition to the $25 renewal/reinstatement fee when expired, according to the Board technician page; KRS 315.138 authorizes a delinquent renewal penalty fee not to exceed $25.
Charitable pharmacy technician fee exceptionApplication fee not required for applicants serving only on a voluntary basis with a qualifying charitable provider pharmacy.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Annual, March 31 each year; renewal period begins February 1 according to the Board technician page.

Kentucky standard pharmacy technician registration renews annually by March 31; the renewal period begins February 1. Standard technician registration renewal does not include a general CE requirement, but registered technicians administering vaccines must meet immunization-related training and CE requirements.

Scope And Supervision Note

Kentucky's 2025 technician regulation separates registered and certified technician roles and clarifies the supervision level and delegated duties for each.

No general statewide pharmacist-to-technician ratio is listed; technician duties still depend on the applicable supervision and delegated-duty rules.

Certified technicians may not perform patient counseling, drug utilization review, interpretation of orders or prescriptions, final product verification, receipt of new verbal orders or prescriptions, or other acts requiring professional judgment.

Where Pharmacy Tech ScholarSM May Fit

Primarily PTCE prep

Kentucky registration is separate from national certification, so Pharmacy Tech ScholarSM's fit is optional PTCE/CPhT preparation.

Pharmacy Tech ScholarSM may be useful if you want national certification for certified-technician status, delegated duties, or employer expectations. Kentucky still controls registration and renewal.

Pharmacy Tech ScholarSM is an online PTCB-recognized education/training course. State requirements vary and may change. The course does not replace state applications, Board decisions, PTCB decisions, employer requirements, or other state-specific steps. Use the applicable Board and PTCB information when making an enrollment decision.
