Certification And Training

Certification

New York requires certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program acceptable to NYSED. NYSED currently identifies PTCB and NHA as accepted certification sources.

Training

NYSED licensure requires acceptable national certification rather than a New York-approved technician school. Separate pharmacy/employer competency training is required before the technician performs registered pharmacy technician duties.

Fees

Initial application$175 total ($75 initial license fee plus $100 first registration fee).
Background checkNo separate background-check fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
FingerprintingNo separate fingerprinting fee is listed; follow the application payment workflow.
Renewal$100 for each triennial registration period.
Late or reinstatementIf registration has lapsed longer than 4 months, NYSED directs licensees to submit a Delayed Registration Application. Check the NYSED renewal workflow for current lapsed-registration fees.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Triennial. First renewal is prorated so future renewals align with the licensee's birth month.

NYSED FAQ says national certification is not required for registration renewal, though professional competence still applies. New York does not list a separate state technician CE requirement.

Scope And Supervision Note

New York registered technician title rules affect what duties a person may perform and where the title may be used.

A pharmacist may supervise no more than two registered pharmacy technicians performing registered pharmacy technician scope tasks; a pharmacist may supervise up to four individuals total when additional individuals are limited to unlicensed-personnel tasks.

Registered pharmacy technicians work under direct personal supervision. They may assist with specified compounding, preparing, labeling, and dispensing tasks that do not require professional judgment. Unlicensed persons may not engage in or assist in compounding.
