Quick Answer

Credential

Oklahoma requires a person to obtain an Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy pharmacy technician permit before serving as a pharmacy technician.

Working Before Approval

An applicant may complete required Phase I training and the Board technician exam before the permit, but Oklahoma Board rule says the permit must be received before the person performs pharmacy technician duties authorized by OAC 535:15-5 and 535:15-13. Non-technician employment or training activities should be distinguished from permitted technician duties.

Trainee Or Entry Path

Educational-use permit path for youth apprenticeship or Oklahoma CareerTech pharmacy technician training program

Pharmacy technician applicants who are at least 17 and enrolled in a youth apprenticeship program for pharmacy technicians or an Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education pharmacy technician training program may complete Phase II training in a pharmacy without being pharmacy employees if the program is approved by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.

The permit is used only for educational purposes for those enrolled in a Board-approved program. Use OSBP instructions for the timing and limits that apply to the educational path.

Use OSBP instructions for moving from the educational training path to a standard technician permit.

Certification And Training

Certification

Oklahoma's standard permit path is built around Board-required Phase I and Phase II pharmacy technician training, a Board technician exam administered by the pharmacist, and Board permit application. PTCB or NHA certification is not required for a standard Oklahoma technician permit.

Training

Oklahoma requires state-specific pharmacy technician training tied to the employing Oklahoma pharmacy or to a Board-approved youth apprenticeship/CareerTech program. A PTCB-recognized online course should not be treated as satisfying Oklahoma's required training unless OSBP specifically supports that conclusion.

Renewal And Continuing Education

Annual. The technician permit expires annually on the last day of the technician's birth month.

The Oklahoma technician permit expires annually on the last day of the technician's birth month. Oklahoma does not set general CE hours for standard technician permit renewal, but a technician with an immunization permit must complete at least 1 hour of immunization-related ACPE-accredited or Board-approved CE annually. Renewal requires current employment in a licensed Oklahoma pharmacy under immediate and direct pharmacist supervision.

Scope And Supervision Note

Oklahoma scope and ratio details matter because technician duties must remain within pharmacist-supervised limits.

Oklahoma ratio rules vary by setting. A licensed retail pharmacy must maintain no more than four pharmacy technicians per licensed pharmacist, and technician duties must stay within the applicable OAC supervision limits.

Technicians must work under immediate and direct supervision of an Oklahoma-licensed pharmacist and may not perform pharmacist-only professional judgment duties such as patient counseling, final prescription certification, new orally communicated prescriptions, drug utilization review decisions, or product-selection decisions.

Where Pharmacy Tech Scholar℠ May Fit

State route first

Oklahoma's permit path uses Phase I/Phase II training, a Board technician exam, and OSBP permit issuance.

Pharmacy Tech Scholar℠ may help at the PTCE/CPhT preparation step if certification is part of your Oklahoma plan. It should not be treated as Oklahoma's Phase I/Phase II or OSBP-required training. Oklahoma still controls Phase I/Phase II training, the Board technician exam, the permit application, and permit issuance.

Pharmacy Tech Scholar℠ is an online PTCB-recognized education/training course. State requirements vary and may change. The course does not replace state applications, Board decisions, PTCB decisions, employer requirements, or other state-specific steps.
