Texas Pharmacy Technician Requirements

Texas currently offers two tiers of pharmacy technician registration: Technician Trainee and Registered Pharmacy Technician. This article describes the requirements to apply for the higher tier Registered Pharmacy Technician License as of 2020. Please verify these requirements with the Texas Board of Pharmacy. We have provided helpful links at the end of this article. Texas pharmacy technician requirements include the following:

Basic Education Requirements

Individuals applying for a Texas Registered Pharmacy Technician license must have completed  or be working towards completion of high school or high school equivalency testing.

Background Check and Documentation Requirements

Applicants are required to submit to a background check using a fingerprinting service.

Application Fees

The current application fee for the Texas Registered Pharmacy Technician license is $83.  Applicants should also consider the cost of fingerprinting, which may add approximately $10 to $50 to the total cost of acquiring the license.

Pharmacy Technician Specific Training or Credentialing

Applicants must have attained national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareers Association (NHA). The applicant must provide his or her certification number on the application. 

Texas does not require completion of a state approved or nationally accredited training program. The only training required in Texas is on-the-job training.

      Texas requires national certification in order to apply for registration as a Pharmacy Technician. You are correct that the PTCB requires a training program or 500 hours of experience to be eligible for the exam. Our course is recognized by the PTCB as a training program so completing our course qualifies you for the exam. Completing our course and passing the PTCE will then meet Texas’s requirement for national certification.
